A dark fantasy premade cover developed for Etsy using AI-assisted image generation, compositing, typography, and market-informed design decisions.
Project Overview
The goal was to create a new dark fantasy premade cover for my Etsy shop.
The project was prompted by discussions around fantasy cover trends and whether character-driven covers could still differentiate within a market increasingly populated by symbolic fantasy designs.
Because premade covers are speculative products, the objective was to create a marketable cover efficiently while still exploring opportunities for differentiation within a familiar genre.
Market Review
I reviewed both Etsy search results and bestselling fantasy titles on Amazon.
My assumption was that Etsy would be saturated with attractive male fantasy protagonists. Instead, I found a large number of symbolic and decorative fantasy covers.
That changed the direction of the project.
Rather than moving away from character-focused covers, I decided to continue working within a category that had already performed well for my shop while experimenting with symbolic elements
Concept Development
I chose to develop a light fae prince concept.
The decision was practical rather than highly strategic. I could immediately visualize the character and knew I could create usable concepts quickly.
Several character directions were explored using AI image generation. During selection, I consistently preferred images that felt more ethereal and story-driven rather than aggressive or warrior-focused.
The final character was chosen because the expression suggested personality and narrative rather than simply presenting an attractive fantasy figure.
Refinement
Initial concepts were generated in MidJourney.
Once a character direction was selected, refinement moved into ChatGPT Image 2 and Gemini Nano Banana 2 through Adobe Firefly.
Different tools were used for different purposes:
MidJourney for exploration
ChatGPT Image 2 for refinement
Gemini Nano Banana 2 for image development and corrections
After image generation, additional adjustments were made in Photoshop to address AI-generated artifacts and improve image quality.
Symbol Development
Several symbolic directions were explored, including stag imagery, winter branches, and lunar motifs.
The final symbol was created by combining two generated images: a circular vine structure and a ring of magical fire.
The resulting image felt more distinctive than common fantasy motifs while remaining flexible enough for a premade cover. Because the final story is unknown, I wanted a symbol that suggested story possibilities without locking the artwork into a specific plot or character archetype.
Typography
A fantasy typeface was selected based on genre fit, readability, and how well it worked within the composition.
Some condensed alternatives were considered, but testing was limited because the overall direction became clear early in the process. The final layout prioritized legibility at thumbnail size while balancing the character and symbolic elements.
Final Outcome
The finished cover combines a character-focused fantasy protagonist with a symbolic design element.
The project was developed through a combination of marketplace review, rapid concept exploration, AI-assisted image development, compositing, and production refinement.
